Rheumatoid Arthritis Physiotherapy Treatment

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune condition affecting the synovial lining of joints, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and eventual joint deformity. Physiotherapy plays a critical role in managing symptoms, preserving joint function, and improving quality of life.

Key Core Pillars of RA Physiotherapy

  • Pain & Swelling Management: Modalities such as thermotherapy (heat pads for stiffness) and cryotherapy (ice packs during active inflammation) help control localized swelling. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) can also alleviate acute joint discomfort.

  • Range of Motion (ROM) & Flexibility: Daily gentle stretching prevents joint capsule tightening, maintains flexibility, and mitigates joint deformities in hands, wrists, knees, and ankles.

  • Muscle Strengthening: Isometric exercises (muscle contraction without joint movement) are utilized during active flare-ups to maintain strength without stressing inflammation. Progressive low-load dynamic exercises are introduced as flare-ups subside.

  • Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Therapy): Warm water buoyancy supports body weight, reducing mechanical load on weight-bearing joints while enabling smooth movement and muscle relaxation.

  • Joint Protection & Ergonomics: Physiotherapists educate patients on energy conservation techniques, proper posture, and custom splints or assistive devices to protect small joints during daily tasks.   GURGAON
